Aah, who?

I’m a writer, I mean that’s basically what’s going on. And a comedian. That too.

Taken by Olivia Spencer

I’ve been published in places like The Guardian, Vanity Fair, Wired, GQ, Sunday Times Magazine, and Esquire. I’ve written about things like trying to become an underwear model, how Flat Earthers find love, and a woman who fell in love with a man she thought was Dwayne Johnson. Until 2018 I was staff writer for the amazing ShortList magazine, where I profiled cover stars including Paul Rudd, Mark Rylance, and Jack Black.

I’ve been shortlisted for awards including the Anthony Burgess Prize, a PPA Award, and a Freelance Writing Award, and was named feature writer of the year at the Guardian Student Media Awards (when I was a student, obviously).

I am also a comedy writer and performer, mainly with sketch group The Awkward Silence. We have been shortlisted for a Writers’ Guild Award, were runners-up in the Leicester Square Theatre Sketch Off competition, and recently signed an option for a TV sketch show. (Watch us here for a good time.) As a solo writer I have written for places like Radio 4, The Daily Mash, and The New Yorker.

I improvise on stage and, in 2021, managed to do it on the BBC One show This Is My House. I also produceĀ Criminal, a murder mystery improv night and podcast that has featured at the Underbelly Festival Southbank and Edinburgh Fringe and starred comedians including Deborah Frances-White, John Finnemore, and Rachel Parris.

My latest book, Welcome to Winkdale, is out now. You could always buy my first, How To Skim A Stone, while you’re there. I am working on my third, which is all about the impact of the microphone.

I am also a story consultant at Pendragon, where I help writers develop scripts for TV and film.
